Joss Cambridge Simmons has worked in childcare for almost 10 years, in a range of jobs, including being a ‘Manny’, room supervisor and running his own babysitting agency.
He is a keen and active supporter of practitioners working in partnership with families, winning awards for his work.
With such a breadth and depth of experience, as well as his obvious dedication in supporting the whole family, Joss has some very clear, practical and positive advice for men thinking about entering childcare.

Stephen is a young man just starting out in childcare, but I was very struck by his mature attitudes towards encouraging men to try the job, career prospects, positive discrimination and the way that society views men in the childcare industry.
He is realistic about some parent’s perspectives towards having a man in the setting, and also points out that his close links with Blackpool football team can give him common ground when talking to other men.
Do have a listen to his great advice and unique perspectives.

Andy Mitchell has had a very interesting, and almost certainly unique, route into the Early Years Sector. From being on the bone marrow donor register through the Anthony Nolan Trust, he is now a qualified Early Years Teacher.

Stuart found he had a natural ability to work with children from a young age. He has worked his way up the career ladder, to be Deputy Manager at Rochford Day Nursery in Rochford, Essex.
His positive attitude and helpful solutions shine through in this interview, epitomised by his thoughts about young children needing to be ‘Happy, Healthy and Safe’.
Here he talks about his research into gender specific toys, being short listed for the Nursery World Practitioner of the Year and gives some good advice for all practitioners who may be considering a career in Early Years Childcare.

Conor Bathgate is the Deputy Manager at Lisson Green Community Nursery, in Westminster, London. In this interview he talks about being a young man in Early Years (he is only 21 and already a Deputy Manager); his research on cohort tracking and how to identify the areas of good practice; and how overcoming difficulties at work in a professional way has increased his self-confidence.
Conor has an extremely positive attitude to both his own job role and the Early Years sector in general. This is summed up in his own words “My job makes me so happy”. This is a real feel-good interview – enjoy!

Gary Simpson is the Lead for Quality Learning and Development for London Early Years Foundation (LEYF). He holds an NNEB and has worked in every echelon of the nursery, including Nursery Nurse and Head of Children’s Services.
He has the most unusual reason for entering into the profession, and strongly encourages men to join support networks to feel less isolated in their roles.
Here Gary discusses the very wide variety of work and families that LEYF support in London and offers some tried and tested techniques for becoming more ‘men-friendly’. He points out that ‘Not everyone is aware that childcare is even an option for men’.

Adam Bodek has just completed his BA (Hons) with QTS primary education course at the University of Greenwich.
He first became interested in early years education when he undertook an Access to Higher Education course in Education Studies at Brighton and Hove City college. He says “I love outdoor learning, I believe children from nursery age upto college age need to spend more time learning outside!”
Here Adam discusses his experiences of University, placements and his plans for the future.
