Men in Childcare: Interview with Tariq Nasser

Posted on January 19, 2015.

Tariq Nasser has recently achieved his Montessori Diploma and is a keen advocate of the Montessori TariqNasserPhoto-smallphilosophies.

He is very proactive about getting men into childcare, being vice-chair of the Men in Childcare London branch and also encouraging pupils to do their work placements in nurseries.

Listen here to him talking about men just needing to have the confidence to do the job; how he feels that being at work is like having fun with your friends and (arguably most importantly) how once you get into a setting you’ll never want to leave.

Enjoy the podcast!

Men in Childcare: Interview with Stephen McEwan

Posted on December 8, 2014.

Stephen McEwanStephen is a young man just starting out in childcare, but I was very struck by his mature attitudes towards encouraging men to try the job, career prospects, positive discrimination and the way that society views men in the childcare industry.

He is realistic about some parent’s perspectives towards having a man in the setting, and also points out that his close links with Blackpool football team can give him common ground when talking to other men.

Do have a listen to his great advice and unique perspectives.

Flexible and responsive planning

Posted on December 5, 2014.

It’s been a funny week.

First my youngest son fractured his finger (rugby!) on his writing hand, just before his mock GCSEs start. So we’ve had various A&E, fracture clinic and physiotherapy appointments.

Then my husband’s cough started to sound quite worrying and after a doctor’s assessment we ended up at an emergency clinic at short notice.

This time of year is tinged with a bit of sadness for me, ever since we found out our son is severely colour blind. Until he was 7 we were in blissful ignorance that the colours of Christmas hold no meaning for him.

Men in Childcare: Interview with Andy Mitchell

Posted on November 9, 2014.

AndyMitchellAndy Mitchell has had a very interesting, and almost certainly unique, route into the Early Years Sector. From being on the bone marrow donor register through the Anthony Nolan Trust, he is now a qualified Early Years Teacher.

Have a listen to find out how this happened – and how this career path has been via Norway (see photo)!

This is my tenth Men in Childcare podcast. They have all been very different, incredibly interesting stories. One common thread is that all the interviewees are very positive about men coming into the Early Years Sector.

So, if you are a man, wondering if this is a career move for you, do have a listen to the podcasts to see if they can help to make up your mind.

Public Health England’s 7 Priorities for the Next 5 Years

Posted on October 26, 2014.

If you have read my previous post on Sir Michael Marmot, you will know that I’m a big fan of Sir Michael’s research, especially Fair Society, Healthy Lives. I’m also always interested in any plans and proposals  that affect children in this country.

So, I was especially excited to see that Public Health England (PHE) has just produced a report that details their 7 priorities for the next 5 years. These are:

Good, Quality Documentation

Posted on October 23, 2014.

Simona McKenzie has posed another interesting question for me: “What should good documentation contain as a summary of children’s learning, that is focussed and shows exactly what the learning journey a child has taken?”

My first thought was that there are certain statutory, legal requirements that all childcare professionals need to fulfil. Namely:

The Department for Education’s Statutory Framework (DfE, 2014: 13) calls for on-going (or formative) assessments based on day-to-day observations of the children, without ‘excessive paperwork’ that is ‘limited to that which is absolutely necessary’. This is incredibly vague and open to interpretation, both by practitioners and Ofsted.

My Book: Sustained Shared Thinking in the Early Years

Posted on October 13, 2014.

sst-cover

Sustained Shared Thinking is fundamental to good Early Years practice.
It costs nothing, yet research (via the EPPE project) has shown that it improves outcomes for children by supporting their deep level learning and holistic development.

This book clearly explains what Sustained Shared Thinking is and examines the skills and expertise needed to initiate, encourage and facilitate it. It explores the attitudes, knowledge and understanding that a practitioner in any setting should adopt in order to start or develop successful Sustained Shared Thinking.

Marion Dowlings bookThe first thing that I noticed about this new, fourth edition, of this book is the full colour illustrations and beautiful layout. This makes it almost impossible not to pick up and look through, as well as giving prominence to the reflection points and practical suggestions.

My 5 Favourite Books for 3rd Year Students

Posted on September 18, 2014.

research booksIt’s the start of the new academic year and I’m getting the usual increase in questions about suitable text books. This year there’s been more questions about third year degree (Level 6) books.

It is very difficult to make recommendations because the books you will need will depend on your third year choices, possibly your choice of dissertation subject matter and the modules or units that your University offers in the third year.

So I have chosen five books here, which I think will cover a wide range of subject areas, whilst being academically at Level 6. They also happen to be personal favourites of mine as well.
